A fireplace is more than a fixture – it’s the heart of your home and what could be more inviting and decadent than a real solid fuel fire?
We can supply, manufacture and install a range of fireplaces to reflect your individuality – from the classic to the more contemporary, because everyone’s idea of comfort and style is different.
Before you start to design your perfect solid fuel fire you will need to make sure it’s suitable for your home:
You will need to know whether you have a chimney or not, what ‘class/type’ it is and the size of your chimney opening. The ‘class/type’ rating is used universally and can be determined only by a chimney specialist(please see our Services page for details)
- Class 1 type this is the ONLY rating of chimney suitable for solid fuel fires and your chimney does NOT need to be lined.
- Class 2 type unfortunately this type is not suitable for a solid fuel but would be perfect for a living flame gas fire or stove.
- Sizes of chimney opening This measurement determines the size of fireplace you can install – usually either a 16” or 18”, however larger sizes can still be accommodated.
- No chimney you will not be able to have a solid fuel fire but you can still benefit from a living flame gas or electric fire even without a chimney.

- Mantels Available in an endless choice of different styles, shapes and sizes, even with or without lights. Covering every taste and era from very traditional to classic to contemporary.
Typical materials used include: wood, limestone, stone, granite, marble, cast-iron, painted metal and brick
- Casts Usually more traditional styles and designs and most suited to solid fuel fires although we can also supply electric and gas fire inserts to fit most casts. Not just available in the typical black arched designs you’d expect – we also now have highlighted and fully polished versions too, with arch and square opening shapes, so casts can now suit the more modern room-setting.
- Hearths Designed to complement and finish any mantel as well as providing a safe, secure grounding to the fireplace. If you’re choosing a solid fuel fire you’ll need your hearth ‘slabbed’ in concrete, allowing the extra strength of base for the ferocious heat of your fire. A solid fuel hearth will always be supplied in a minimum of three pieces, as opposed to a hearth suitable for gas or electric fires which is legally allowed to be one piece. The ‘gap’ in between the pieces allows for heat expansion.
Typical materials used: marble, micrograins and agglomerates, slate, granite, stone, brick and tiles.
- Interior/Back panels Designed to provide the perfect backdrop to your new fireplace. Most people choose to match their interior/back panel to the same material as their hearth and therefore the same materials would be suitable and the same rules apply with reference to ‘slabbing’ for solid fuel fires.
Typical materials used: marble, micrograins and agglomerates, slate, granite, stone, brick and tiles.
Wood for your fire
Gibson & Goold is a proud stockist of Certainly Wood fuel products – the best kiln-dried logs and kindling you can buy.
The benefits of kiln-dried wood are considerable:
- Kiln-dried wood provides a clean burn with high heat output
- The more efficiently a fire burns the less fuel is required and less C02 emissions are produced.
- More economical – drier wood burns slower with more heat
- Kiln-dried wood prevents sooting of the chimney/flue
